DIY Healthy Hair Tea
Have you ever thought about your hair routine? How often you wash your hair, how you style (heat or none), what kind of products you use? Have you struggled like I have with thinning, dull, unhealthy hair? Or were you ever left feeling frustrated after spending TONS of dollars on products you thought would help only to be left feeling disappointed? As a woman I feel our hair tells a lot about our health and wellness. Also as woman who has experienced ALOT of bad hair days I can also sympathize with you. That’s why I felt called to create this post! I’m taking a spin on mindfulness and talking about individuals’ hair routine: DIY Hair Tea for Healthy Hair .
I’ve always been a dabbler in natural remedies for some time. It started many moons ago as a teenager. A quick story….
I was 14 and I desperately wanted to color my hair blonde. Why might you ask? Well because I wanted what I didn’t have which was straight blonde hair. (Who doesn’t go through this?). So I asked my mother who stated “Ask your father.” When I did he snidely asked “What you want to color you hair blonde?” Of course I couldn’t fess up to that! So infamously I replied; “No, I would like to color it purple.” And that’s the end folks! It makes me laugh every time. Needless to say I was banned from doing anything to my hair for awhile I bought at the store, which led me down the natural path to today……
Natural Is Better
I’m stating from experience, if you have always been a product girl and are starting this new natural journey, this is better. Have you ever read the ingredients on the labels? Or wonder what those massive words are? What about preservatives? How does all of this affect us? Maybe it’s just me but when I read things I can’t pronounce and google them, it has made me put things back on the shelf quicker than anything.
When we create things at home we know exactly what we are putting into it. I find with what ever I create I have more awareness and gratitude for that creation. I find also more intent in putting some work and effort into whatever I am doing, I practice more thankfulness at the end of the creation too.
The Skin is Your Biggest Organ!
I think we tend to think our skin is this metal shield not letting anything into our bodies. To some degree this is true, but not for everything. Yes our skin is designed to protect us, but it also absorbs, and it secrets. Everything we come in contact with can be absorbed through our skin and get into our blood stream.
Its 26 seconds for skin absorbed products to get into the blood stream!
Buying products with ingredients we aren’t familiar with, or have no knowledge of; we introduce that into our whole body, not only the scalp. I’ve personally seen people have negative effects from hair care products and even hair color too! Obviously not all hair products are bad. Please don’t jump and throw all your products away. My purpose is to make you question what you’re putting on your scalp and hair.
Negative Things Impacting Hair Health
Products/ Chemicals
It’s known fact that some products are heavy in heavy metals, sulfates, parabens, even formaldehyde! (Bobsalons.co.uk) These products are also most likely disguised through other names on the ingredient list of your product bottles. Why with the different name? They are chemicals derived from the basic chemical make up of that one. An example is alcohols, if you see a chemical with the last two letters of -ol it is most likely some sort of alcohol ingredient.
An App to Help
The Think Dirty App. (no affiliate marketing) Is a beautiful app you can scan products, or search them. Products previously registered will list off a number, 1-4 being better for your health and 5-9 having harmful chemicals that can cause negative effects on your body. So if reading ingredient labels aren’t your thing I strongly suggest checking this app out!
Stress
Ever been so stressed it effects your hair? I’ve been there. During nursing school I went through such stress my hair thinned out on my temple areas. I was so self conscious, being only 25, I ended up cutting my hair completely off and wearing a short pixie cut. I did this for a year until I got my stress under control.
Diet
It’s true what you put into your body you get out. How could one expect to have beautiful vibrant strong locks if they’re eating highly processed, fatty, sugary foods? I like to ask the analogy of this:
Would you ever put gas in your car that you know was not just gas? If there was a lot of water and bad things that would make the motor blow up? Would you take the chance and risk blowing up? Even if it was cheaper than other gas? We all answer No. So then why do we choose foods that aren’t good for us? We also have gas tanks, the stomach, and when filled with not so good things over time our motors, the body, will show more wear and tear than others who choose to consume more of a balanced diet.

Herbs to promote Hair Scalp Health
Lavender
Lavender is a common herb many individuals know about. It has a beautiful fragrance, and it is well knows for its calming effect! It promotes hair health also while promoting scalp health! Lavender is good for anti inflammation and anti bacterial. It even can be used to keep head lice away!
Marshmallow Root
It contains Lauric acid and mucilage. Lauric acid protects the hair follicle and root. This acid also decreases the potential of hair loss. Mucilage is a thick substance that is made up of polysaccharides and protein making it a good detangler ingredient. Many people boil this herb in water, then add to their conditioner. Marshmallow root is also good for reducing inflammation to the scalp. (Wimpoleclinic)
Rosemary
If you’re looking for longer stronger hair then you also have to target scalp health too. You can use either the herb or oil, but no matter rosemary has many benefits to the hair and scalp! It helps get rid of build up from products, oils, and more! Rosemary also helps with a dry or itchy scalp. I also personally enjoy the smell of rosemary.
Fenugreek Seed
I wasn’t well versed with fenugreek seed until recently, and I can say that this is an amazing herb that is beneficial for hair and scalp health. Fenugreek is naturally an anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti bacterial. Which is very beneficial to the scalp. It makes the hair softer making it easier to comb and adds strength to every lock! I have even read that many people use fenugreek oil in their conditioners because it makes a great detangler.
Flax Seed
Flaxseed has high amounts of vitamin E and fatty acid Omega 3s. This herb is really great to promote hair strength and prevent. Future breakages.
Sage
Sage is also one of those wonderful herbs that also targets the hair and scalp. It is in the same family of lavender and rosemary. It stimulates the blood circulation to the scalp to promote hair growth. Sage promotes thicker hair growth as well.
What Is Hair Tea?
Tea is not only for drinking! I kept seeing reels of people making herbal blends of tea to spray on their scalp and hair between washes to promote better healthy growing hair. So I decided to take some time to make my own herbal blend, test it, and share with you lovely people here.
I infused natural dried herbs I purchased previously at the health food store into water and have been using it to spray my scalp, and hair after and in between washings. Essentially you could use any herbs you want in a healthy hair tea as long as they promote hair/ scalp health.
Supplies
- Cheesecloth
- Pot
- Water
- 1tbs of the herbs mentioned above (lavender, marshmallow root, rosemary, fenugreek seed, flax seed, sage)
Instructions:
Cut a decent size square of cheese cloth. You want to be able to fit all the herbs in it, so don’t cut too small. Place your 1 tablespoon measured herbs into the center of the cheese cloth, then tie the top off. I used a bread tie. Place in a pot of water and set the heat to low on your stove. I steeped this for some time, roughly 30 mins, or when my house became aroma filled with these herbs. Turn the heat off and let the infusion cool down.
You can add to a spray bottle or choose to take some and pour on your scalp after you wash. I personally like the spray bottle method because I’m not wasting it as much as pouring. Also I feel like I can target certain areas of my hair better with a spray bottle versus pouring it over my head.
Edit: I suggest when making a larger batch to keep the hair tea stored in a cooler temperature such as a refrigerator. I did find that after a week or two there it was not so fresh looking. Keeping at a colder climate should help your hair tea.
What I’ve noticed Since Using Hair Tea
I’ve been using this infusion for some time and I noticed immediate results! My hair is softer and doesn’t feel as dry in between washes! I have more of my curly texture back in the top layer of my hair (where most of my dryness is). My hair feels thicker and feels like there is more life in it! I strongly suggest using a healthy hair tea based on my rapid results!
I hope you find this post useful, I know I will be making more healthy hair tea for myself when I run out of this current batch! As always if you enjoy this post, take a spin around, see you next time. Blessed Be.
